"Blessed are the humble in spirit."

Blessed are the poor in spirit, For theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 5:3.

Jesus taught on the Beatitudes as part of His famous Sermon on the Mount. The Beatitudes tell us how we can be truly blessed. Jesus begins by saying that the poor in spirit are blessed. Being poor in spirit is not a call to poverty; it is to be humble and depend upon God completely for every good, both bodily and spiritual. In Luke 18:10-13, Jesus told this story: "Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other people—robbers, evildoers, adulterers—or even like this tax collector.  I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.’ But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner.’” Which one went home justified? The one who was poor in spirit. Jesus contrasts different reactions to the kingdom of God to show that humility is an essential ingredient of faith. Matthew 23:12 says, "And whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted."

இயேசு தனது புகழ்பெற்ற மலைப்பிரசங்கத்தின் ஒரு பகுதியாக பாக்கியமானவைகள் பற்றி போதித்தார். நாம் எவ்வாறு உண்மையிலேயே ஆசீர்வதிக்கப்பட முடியும் என்பதை பாக்கியவசனங்கள் நமக்குச் சொல்கிறது. ஆவியில் எளிமையுள்ளவர்கள் பாக்கியவான்கள் என்று இயேசு ஆரம்பிக்கிறார். ஆவியில் ஏழையாக இருப்பது வறுமைக்கான அழைப்பு அல்ல; இது தாழ்மையாக இருக்க வேண்டும், ஒவ்வொருவரும்  சரீர மற்றும் ஆன்மீக நன்மைக்காகவும் தேவனை முழுமையாக சார்ந்திருக்க வேண்டும். லூக்கா 18: 10-13 -ல், இயேசு இந்த கதையைச் சொன்னார்: "இரண்டு பேர் ஜெபிக்க தேவாலயத்திற்குச் சென்றனர், ஒருவர் பரிசேயன், மற்றவன் ஆயக்காரன். அந்தப் பரிசேயன் தனியாக நின்று ஜெபம் செய்தான்: “தேவனே! நான் பறிகாரர், அநியாயக்காரர், விபசாரக்காரர் ஆகிய மற்ற மனுஷரைப்போலவும், இந்த ஆயக்காரனைப்போலவும் இராததனால் உம்மை ஸ்தோத்திரிக்கிறேன். வாரத்தில் இரண்டுதரம் உபவாசிக்கிறேன்; என் சம்பாத்தியத்திலெல்லாம் தசமபாகம் செலுத்திவருகிறேன்.” ஆனால் ஆயக்காரன் தூரத்திலே நின்று, தன் கண்களையும் வானத்துக்கு ஏறெடுக்கத் துணியாமல், தன் மார்பிலே அடித்துக்கொண்டு: “தேவனே! பாவியாகிய என்மேல் கிருபையாயிரும் என்றான்.” யார் நீதிமானாக்கப்பட்டவனாய்த் தன் வீட்டுக்குப்போனான்? ஆவியில் எளிமையுள்ளவனாக  இருந்தவன் தான். மனத்தாழ்மை விசுவாசத்தின் இன்றியமையாத அம்சம் என்பதைக் காட்ட இயேசு தேவனுடைய ராஜ்யத்திற்கு வெவ்வேறு பிரதிபலன்களை வித்தியாசப்படுத்திக் காட்டுகிறார். மத்தேயு 23:12 கூறுகிறது: "தன்னை உயர்த்துகிறவன் தாழ்த்தப்படுவான், தன்னைத் தாழ்த்துகிறவன் உயர்த்தப்படுவான்."
